Before you come to camp, you'll complete an activity sign-up form at home with your parents and send it back to us before the summer starts. Your schedule will be all ready to go when you get to camp, full of six activities from your top ten list! After the first week at camp, you will sign up for the next week's activities. You may choose to stay with the same activities or try some different ones. The same is true for week three. We want you to go as far as you would like in an activity, but also be exposed to lots of new activities. If you don't see a particular activity you are looking for, don't worry! We probably offer it during Daily Choice.

Daily Choice gives you the chance to try something new every single day! During Daily Choice, you can try activities that are on the regular schedule (it's kind of like a "taste-test!") or you can sign up for something completely different, like Extreme Bocce, Ultimate Frisbee, or Magic Tricks. Another fun time is Evening Activity, where you and your bunkmates will participate together in an all-camp event or an organized activity just for you! It's a great opportunity for bunk bonding and exposure to different areas of camp. You can read more about our activities on our Program page.

CAMP LOCATION: Camp Fernwood's 100 acre facility is located in the "Lakes District" of southern Maine. We are 45 minutes northwest of Portland, and only 2 hours from Boston.

CAMP FACILITIES: Fernwood sits on 100 acres of meadows bordered by woodlands and the sandy shore of one of the largest and cleanest lakes in the region - Lake Thompson. Campers are grouped by school grade and live in beautiful and airy wooden bunks with screens and shutters for weather protection.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Founded in 1921, Camp Fernwood is a traditional, overnight camp for girls in Poland, Maine. The Fernwood family is known for its warm atmosphere and concern for each child. Campers and mature staff live together in a beautiful, rustic setting, with many opportunities for friendships, learning and play.

Nurturing tolerance, unselfishness, and an appreciation of a simpler life in the out-of-doors. Our full season provides girls with enough time to experience new challenges, enhance self confidence, develop activity skills, and establish enduring friendships in safe, beautiful surroundings. Fernwood is not divided into sections, for we are, in essence, one family, building community spirit through the contributions of each of our girls.

Each camper has an elective program of activities, chosen with the guidance of parents and camp staff. Older campers may specialize in a specific activity. Expert instruction is offered in all activities, including swimming, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, tennis, gymnastics, aerobics, English riding, archery, riflery, soccer, softball, field hockey, volleyball, drama, music, dance, crafts, ceramics, woodworking, silver jewelry, drawing, painting, photography, and rock climbing. The tripping program includes day trips, as well as extended white water canoe and kayak, backpacking, hiking, and rock climbing trips.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Fernwood has a broad geographic diversity. Campers come from 23 of the United States, France, Spain, Hong Kong, Colombia, and Switzerland.

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
Looking for a summer job?  If you're at least 19 years old and finished your first year of college, we'd love to discuss our opportunities with you.

Fernwood's staff to camper ratio is the best we know of, at 1:1.5    This allows us to run a high quality program all day, every day, while still allowing our staff time to recharge with generous time off.

A strong interest in working with children is required, and counselors are hired to teach within a specific activity(ies) specialty .

The value of the camp experience is extremely important at Tapawingo. Next to safety, our primary goal is that each camper return home at the end of the summer feeling better about herself. We know that campers will have tons of fun, learn wonderful skills in their activities, and make lifelong friends. But above all, we know that it is at Tapawingo where they will learn how to be leaders, how to be true friends, and how to be themselves. Tapawingo is a safe place for the development of character and values: judgment, personal responsibility, and independence.

We provide encouragement, encouragement and more encouragement – to assure that each girl develops independence and self-confidence. We do not award trophies for the best athlete or best camper. Any camper may sign up to be on a Tapawingo team; she does not need to try out. We are a cheering and singing kind of place, where a child strives to do her very best.

Tapawingo’s call for fun and adventure is contagious – between 80 and 90 percent of our kids come back to Tapawingo, year after year, and many bring their friends. Tradition is a cornerstone of our camp. Many Tapawingo campers are second-generation campers, and some are third.
